Take Away

1. When do you need a dental crown?

A dental crown can be a necessity in many cases like:

  • To protect a tooth that is susceptible to decay or to break.
  • To hold together parts of a tooth if there are cracks.
  • To restore a tooth that is severely damaged or broken.
  • Dental crowns are also used for supporting dental bridges. They act as the support on which the dental bridge is mounted.
  • To cover a discolored tooth.
  • To cover teeth that have been treated using Root Canal Treatment.
  • Used as the top portion of a dental implant.
  • To cover a tooth with a large filling.

2. Types of Dental Crown: choose the best dental crown for yourself.

Dental crowns can be categorized into different groups based on various criteria. These can be of different types depending on the kind of material they are made of. Dental crowns can be made of different substances like:

  • Porcelain
  • Metal
  • Ceramic
  • Zirconia
  • Composite resin
  • And a combination of these substances.

Metal dental crowns

Several metals like gold, palladium, nickel, and chromium can be used to make dental crowns. The metal crowns are the toughest of all other materials and do not frequently chip or break. These require only a small portion of the tooth to be removed and can easily handle the chewing and biting force. These dental crowns last the longest among other types.

The drawback of metal crowns is their shiny and metallic look which cannot look like normal teeth. These are a good option for teeth that are not easily seen as the last molars. Another problem with metal crowns is the fact that these are not safe for some procedures like MRI or CT scans. These have to be removed before you can get these tests done.

Other different types of dental crowns are categorized based on their duration of the placement. These are of the following types:

  • Permanent dental crown
  • Temporary dental crown

Permanent dental crown

As the name suggests, these crowns are placed permanently over your teeth. These are made according to the actual shape of your tooth that needs the crown. There is some making time included, till then, a temporary crown is placed on the affected tooth.

Temporary dental crown

Temporary crowns are placed on your teeth for a short period till the permanent crown is being made. These are attached to your tooth using a weak adhesive that can be easily removed when the permanent crown is ready.

Complications can occur with dental crowns as well. These vary with different types of dental crowns, but some problems are commonly seen like:

  • Sensitivity in the tooth or surrounding areas
  • Discomfort due to the dental crown
  • Loosening or chipping of the crown
  • Allergic reaction to the dental crown

3. Dental Crown Procedure: Is it painful?

Tooth crown procedure requires either one or two sittings. During the first sitting, your tooth will be examined and X-Ray images of the tooth will be taken. Then molds can also be made for the dental crown at that time. The dentist will then file and shape your teeth and take impressions to make dental crowns. After all this is done, your teeth would be covered with a temporary dental crown to protect them from further damage.

Before beginning the procedure, your dentist will give a local anesthetic that will numb the area. You will not feel any pain sensation during the process. This is done to make the whole process pain-free and comfortable for you.

Preparing a tooth for a crown is the first step in the procedure. Once the tooth and surrounding area is appropriately anesthetized, your dentist will reshape the tooth along the chewing lines so that the crown can fit properly. The part of the natural tooth to be removed depends on the kind of crown that has to be implanted.

After the tooth has been properly reshaped, your dentist will take impressions of the tooth, which acts as the molds on which the dental crown is made. Impressions of the surrounding teeth and teeth above and below are also taken to ensure that the crown aligns properly and does not interfere in biting.

The impressions are then sent to the labs that make the dental crowns, and you will have to wait for a few weeks before the permanent crowns are ready. Your dentist will then cement the permanent crowns to your teeth.

Taking care of your tooth pre and post crown placement is very important to increase the longevity of the dental crowns.

Pre-crown placement care includes the following steps:

  • When you are fitted with the temporary crown, avoid eating hard and sticky food that can cause damage to the tooth or the crown.
  • Brush properly but gently in that region.
  • While flossing, do not pull out the floss. Slide it between the teeth instead. This will ensure that the temporary crown does not come off with the floss.
  • Avoid smoking or alcohol consumption.
  • Use that side of the mouth minimally that is fitted with a dental crown.

After the dental crown has been placed, care has to be taken to protect it.

  • Avoid rinsing and brushing your teeth the day of your procedure.
  • Use a straw for drinking liquids.
  • Avoid spitting.
  • Avoid smoking or alcohol consumption.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after the procedure or till the anesthesia is completely worn off.
  • Do not chew any hard or sticky food items as these can cause damage to the crown or even cause dislodging of the crown.
